dreams and water, 2023

duck canvas soft sculpture, raw clay, water, lined paper

dreams and water is a grief choreography commissioned by Craft Contemporary. This sculpture invited viewers participation with a score that instructed them to write everything they remembered on the paper provided, put the paper in a bowl filled with water to pulp, go on a silent walk with hands full of clay, keep their hands moving with the clay as they walked, and to end their walk back at the sculpture by placing their grief shape onto the quilted ground.

Grief shapes, bodies, and residue accumulated with the sculpture over the course of four hours, as the unconscious was given space to be made material.
